WASHINGTON: U.S. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were rushed out of the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on Saturday night after a gunman opened fire on security personnel, triggering panic at one of Washington’s most high-profile gatherings and raising serious concerns about security lapses.

The attack unfolded at the Washington Hilton, where the suspect fired a shotgun at a Secret Service checkpoint before being tackled and taken into custody. Officials said the officer struck in the incident was saved by a bulletproof vest and later released from hospital, according to the United States Secret Service.

Trump, who later addressed reporters at a late-night White House briefing alongside Vice President JD Vance and cabinet members, said he believed he may have been the intended target, though authorities have not confirmed this. He described the suspect as a “lone wolf,” a characterization officials say remains under investigation.

Law enforcement identified the suspect as a 31-year-old Jew named Cole Tomas Allen, California resident, reportedly armed with a shotgun, handgun, and multiple knives. He is believed to have been a guest at the hotel, intensifying scrutiny over how such weapons were able to bypass multiple layers of security at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, a black-tie event attended by more than 2,000 political leaders, journalists, and diplomats.

The घटना began around 8:35 p.m., when the gunman charged through a security checkpoint, briefly catching personnel off guard. Surveillance footage later showed him moving rapidly through at least two layers of security before being subdued. No shots were fired by security forces at the suspect during the takedown.

Inside the ballroom, the atmosphere shifted instantly from ceremony to chaos. Guests in formal attire dove under tables as gunshots echoed from the rear of the venue. Security agents formed protective shields around senior officials, some physically covering cabinet members while others drew weapons and secured exits. Armed personnel in combat gear stormed the stage as Trump, his wife, and other dignitaries were evacuated.

Trump was kept backstage for nearly an hour before being transported to the White House. The event was immediately canceled, and what followed was an extraordinary late-night press interaction, with attendees still in evening wear witnessing a rare moment of real-time crisis response at the highest level of government.

The incident carries added historical weight. The same venue was the site of the 1981 assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan, reinforcing concerns about recurring vulnerabilities at predictable, high-profile locations.

It also marks at least the third major threat involving Trump since 2024, reflecting a broader climate of political polarization and rising lone-actor violence in the United States. In one earlier incident, Trump was wounded in the ear during a campaign rally shooting, while another involved an armed suspect intercepted near a golf course.

Investigators are now focused on the suspect’s motive and, critically, how he was able to bring multiple weapons into a heavily secured venue hosting top U.S. leadership. The breach is expected to prompt a sweeping review of event security protocols and renewed scrutiny of protective measures surrounding the presidency.
