The “Sleeping Prince” of Saudi Arabia dies at 36 after being in a coma for 19 years.

RIYADH: The “Sleeping Prince” of Saudi Arabia, Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal Al Saud, has died at the age of 36. He had been in a coma for almost 20 years after a terrible accident.

This weekend, the royal family revealed his death, bringing to a close a sad chapter in the Kingdom’s recent history that was full of love, strength, and a father’s unwavering hope.

“We are very sad and have complete faith in God’s will as we mourn our dear son, Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.” His father, Prince Khaled bin Talal, stated on social media, “May Allah have mercy on him.”

The funeral prayers will take place on Sunday after the Asr prayer at the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque in Riyadh.

In 2005, when Prince Al-Waleed was 15 years old, he got into a vehicle accident in London and had a catastrophic brain hemorrhage that changed his life forever. He was transported back to Saudi Arabia and then taken to King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh for treatment. He was in a vegetative state and needed life support even though he got superior medical care from professionals in the U.S. and Spain.

His father’s unwillingness to stop giving medical help became a powerful position that echoed throughout Saudi Arabia. Year after year, Prince Khaled stayed by his son’s bedside, turning his story into one of hope, faith, and fatherly love that touched the whole country.

Prince Al-Waleed was born in April 1990 and was the oldest son of Prince Khaled bin Talal, a high-ranking member of the House of Saud. People all around the country prayed for the prince and cared about him over the years. He became a modest symbol of strength.

Many Saudis have sent their condolences and shared memories of his life, which was lived in silence but greatly felt.
