LAGOS: Nigerian nurses have called off their nationwide strike after securing a breakthrough deal with the federal government. The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) announced the suspension of the four-day industrial action on Saturday, August 2, 2025, following government promises to address a comprehensive set of demands and “immediately” begin implementation.
Key outcomes of the agreement include:
- Upward review of shift and uniform allowances
- Introduction of a new salary structure for nurses
- Boosted core duty allowances
- Major recruitment drive for new nursing staff
- Creation of a dedicated Department of Nursing Services in the Ministry of Health
The union’s decision to halt the strike follows the government’s commitment to a “time-bound” implementation framework as outlined in a signed memorandum of understanding. While specific timelines for each action remain undisclosed, both parties confirmed that execution would commence right away, with union officials pledging to closely track government compliance.
Importantly, the government has guaranteed that no nurse will face disciplinary measures for participation in the strike. Talks on long-term salary issues and additional reforms continue, but public hospitals have resumed services as normal nationwide.
