ABUJA: Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has officially resigned from his position, citing health reasons. President Bola Tinubu accepted the resignation with immediate effect, according to a statement released by Bayo Onanuga, Special Assistant to the President on Information and Strategy.
Badaru Abubakar, a two-term former governor of Jigawa State, submitted his resignation letter on December 1, 2025. President Tinubu expressed gratitude for his service to the nation and is expected to inform the Senate of his successor later this week.
The resignation comes amid President Tinubu’s recent declaration of a national security emergency, with plans to expand on the measures in the coming days. Speculation is mounting that former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, will be appointed as the new Defence Minister, following a high-profile meeting between Musa and President Tinubu at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa.
Badaru Abubakar served as Defence Minister since August 21, 2023, and his departure marks a significant shift in Nigeria’s security leadership at a critical time for the country.
