Modi Visits Israel Amid Rising US–Iran Tensions

JERUSALEM: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Israel on Wednesday for a two-day visit aimed at strengthening strategic ties, even as regional tensions escalate over a potential military confrontation between the United States and Iran.

Addressing the Knesset, Modi expressed solidarity with Israel following the October 2023 Hamas attacks and reaffirmed India’s “zero tolerance” approach to terrorism. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu echoed similar sentiments, highlighting shared security challenges faced by both nations.

The visit marks nearly nine years since Modi became the first Indian prime minister to travel to Israel in 2017. With both leaders still in office, discussions are expected to focus on defence cooperation, artificial intelligence, and expanding bilateral partnerships, particularly as Israel seeks to boost military exports.

Modi’s trip comes at a sensitive geopolitical moment. The United States has increased its military presence near Iran amid stalled negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear programme. Analysts warn that any escalation could destabilize the region, potentially impacting Israel and Gulf nations, where millions of Indians reside and contribute significantly through remittances.

While Modi did not directly reference the US military buildup or Iran in his speech, he emphasized dialogue, peace, and regional stability. He also voiced support for efforts to end the Gaza conflict, stating that a peaceful resolution must address broader regional concerns, including the Palestinian issue.
