WASHINGTON: UN Secretary-General António Guterres has voiced deep concern over Israel’s decision to suspend the operations of several international non-governmental organizations in the occupied Palestinian territory, warning the move could further worsen Gaza’s already severe humanitarian crisis.
In a statement issued Friday, Guterres urged Israel to reverse the decision, emphasizing that humanitarian agencies are essential for delivering lifesaving assistance to Palestinians, particularly in Gaza.
“This announcement comes on top of earlier restrictions that have already delayed critical food, medical, hygiene, and shelter supplies from entering Gaza,” said Stéphane Dujarric, the UN chief’s spokesperson. “This recent action will further exacerbate the humanitarian crisis facing Palestinians.”
The suspension has intensified international concern over growing access constraints on aid groups operating in Gaza and across the occupied Palestinian territory, where shortages of food, medicine, and basic necessities have reached emergency levels.
Humanitarian organizations warn that any disruption to NGO operations could have immediate and devastating consequences for civilians—especially children, the elderly, and displaced families as aid corridors remain limited and security conditions continue to deteriorate.
The United Nations has called on all parties to uphold international humanitarian law and ensure unhindered access for humanitarian assistance amid the ongoing conflict.
